Hwang Sa Bom Nim with England's finest, Mr. Russell Howells(L)from Brighton and Robert Salter Kyo Sa from Manchester.
Mr. Howells taught a Children's class for the first time at the Shim Sa and used a great example
of how waves build and the crash on the beaches near his home to explain Shin Chook.
Salter Kyo Sa had injured his ACL(knee) before Ko Dan Ja, but was fitted with a brace that kept
his knee from moving laterally so that he could attempt to make it through the week.
His knee gave out on several occasions, he would rest for 5-10 minutes and then continue.
In Neh in action!

oxygen from the awesome medical staff due to altitude sickness the last couple of days
and felt that this was the appropriate pose for the group photo.

Sa Dan Candidates the morning of the Shim Sa at the field where we did outdoor training.
We stopped here every morning(6:15am) on our way to Moo Pahl Dan Khum for a group massage.
In a single file line each person would give a back rub to the person in front of them,
then turn around and do the same thing in the junior direction. This tradition started after a particularly difficult night of coming to a consensus on a new assignment for our Ko Dan Ja project. Imagine coming to a consensus with 25 people that in their every day training are the senior members or leaders at their studios. Many of my seniors had told me that oneness with the group is probably the biggest challenges of Ko Dan Ja. We lost one evening displaying our healthy egos but turned it around the next morning by taking care of each other with the group massage. A special thanks to Kyo Sa Nim Rodney Williams for starting this tradition. From hardship one gets the opportunity to learn and grow. |

Friday night(6/16/00) after a long workout to prepare for the Shim Sa on Saturday(6/17/00), Johnson Sa Bom Nim asked us all
to come out to the back of the training hall. We all thought that maybe we had done something wrong and we were
about to get "suggestions for improvement." Instead, he wanted to show us the moon just rising over the mountains.
Lisa Donnelly Sa Bom Nim immediately suggested "Let's go out to the field and do Po Wol(Embracing the Moon) Hyung." Approximately 40
of the candidates and visitors performed the hyung together and then we shared some of our feelings about the experience.
The moon had risen a little higher over the mountains and was much brighter. We performed the hyung again and as we did the 2nd embracing
the moon motion in the 2nd line of the hyung we were all literally embracing the moon. Everyone just automatically held this position
for a few extra seconds and then continued on with the rest of the hyung. Afterwards, Donnelly Sa Bom Nim asked if we might all try
to do this hyung every time the moon is full, so that we can maintain our connection to each other from all across the nation and the world
(we had candidates from the U.K. and Mexico). Tonight(7/16/00) was the first full moon since my return from Ko Dan Ja, I performed Po Wol
hyung tonight just before I wrote this.
