Mahggls' History

Charles Mahggls (known world wide as Charlie) founded Mahggls Industries in 1966.  Charlie was an avid surfer, which he remains to this day.  Discouraged by the quality of the waxes used to coat surfboards he experimented with numerous formulas of wax until he found the perfect combination.  When the international surfing champion of 1967, a friend of Charlie’s, noted that Charlie’s wax was part of his success, Charlie was inundated with requests for it and Charlie’s Cool Stuff Wax Company was born.

In 1970, Charlie became bored with the single product his company offered and began to branch out into other areas including real estate (beachfront, of course!) and exercise clubs (Charlie’s Surfside Athletic Clubs) in beach cities along the California Coast.  By 1975 Charlie’s companies had combined revenue of $100 million and they were united under the company’s current name, Mahggls Industries, Inc. (MII).  Charlie was only 29 years old.

MII had its initial public offering in 1976 and trades under the symbol: SRFSUP.  Charlie is extremely proud of the fact that today half of MII stock is in the hands of its employees.

Today, Mahggls Industries, Inc. (MII) is made up of 10 companies and divisions with sales in fiscal year 2000 of over $9 billion.  MII has plants and offices in 38 countries, over 40,000 employees and its products are sold in every corner of the world.  Since 1992, it has been named in every list of the best companies to work for in America.

Despite the size of his empire and the time it takes to coordinate all the activities of the Chief Executive Officer, Charlie still manages to slip away three mornings a week to surf.  And, he and his grandson, Charlie III, just came up with a new and improved Charlie’s Cool Stuff Wax.
